Stephen Cooper Arraigned Following Saugus Shooting

SAUGUS, Mass. – September 25, 2025 – Stephen Cooper, 47, of Saugus, was arraigned today in Lynn District Court and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, two counts of assault and battery, disorderly conduct, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and assault and battery with a firearm, the Office of Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker confirms.
Authorities allege that Cooper shot a 32-year-old man in the leg on Wednesday night on Lincoln Avenue in Cliftondale Square outside of an ice cream stand. Saugus Police responded to the call shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
Cooper pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Hon. Amanda Ward set bail at $50,000 and ordered the defendant to stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victim and witnesses, not possess firearms or dangerous weapons, and surrender his license to carry.
Assistant District Attorney Thomas D’Amato, Jr. handled the arraignment on behalf of the Commonwealth. Cooper was represented by attorney Peter Lemire. Cooper is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing on October 20.
All suspects and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
